Hubby and I went to a Japanese drum concert Friday night. It was mesmerising! I loved it!!! Hubby enjoyed the concert too, but he did say it was funny that he spent $$$ to watch a guy in a g-string hit a drum! HA HA!!
We'd seen the Kodo Drummers years ago in Ohio, so we had an idea what to expect. Yet this concert seemed more physically demanding of the performers and more diverse.
Nagata Shachu has enthralled audiences with its heart-pounding performances of the Japanese drum (taiko) since its formation in 1998. The ensemble has toured widely throughout Canada, the US and Italy performing in theatres, concert halls, and major music festivals. While rooted in the folk drumming traditions of Japan, the group's principal aim is to rejuvenate this ancient art form by producing innovative and exciting music that seeks to create a new voice for the taiko. Taking its name from founder Kiyoshi Nagata, and shachu (an old term for a performing troupe), Nagata Shachu has become renowned for its exacting, straightforward performances. Their playing is the combination of unbounded spirit with the highest levels of musicianship and discipline. The result is an unforgettable experience that is both powerful in expression and heartfelt in its sincerity.
A champagne reception was held after the concert where we could meet the performers. I bought their CD and got all of the performers to sign it. It was a fun night!!!
That sounds like that would be really neat to see. Seems like there is a wide variety of performances in your area.
ReplyDeleteWow, you and Jack are really getting to do some interesting things now that you work at a college. This kind of thing is right up your alley huh? You always were into art. History mostly.
