The Day My Childhood Died

What a bizarre day to have two of Gen-X's childhood icons die the same day. While I'll admit I'm not grief stricken or even shed a tear, I do have a sense of sadness... mostly because it reminds me that my "youth" is gone.

Back in the day all my friends and I wanted to be Farrah Fawcett; if you couldn't tell... just take a look at how we wore our hair. The "feathered" look was so "cool beans" and recess was all about playing Charlies Angels.

When we got a little older and music became more our style... well, who better defined the 80's than the King of Pop himself... Michael Jackson. Moonwalking, the robot, Pepsi, MTV, red-leather jackets, one glove, white socks and penny loafers... his songs conjure up the best memories of my high school years.

And so with their deaths all those memories came flooding back... and while I feel a little sad, it's also been fun to replay those memories. Of course my Michael Jackson music has been playing on the CD player and it feels like 1982+ again... and then it hits me that I'm pushing 40 and that's when the sadness kicks in.

I find that this news of their deaths causes me to feel a bit strange and a sadness fills my heart too. I remember the days when Michael Jackson was cool, I remember the poster that you had of him in your room. He became such a weird wacky character over the years with his appearance changing so drastically and all the accusations of child molestation, I think many people really don't care to much for what he became, but I like to remember his early days. Remember the Jackson 5 christmas album we always use to listen to? It is all a bit sad. It is so uniquely strange too that they did both die on the same day....I think Farah's death didn't get much attention because it's all been about Michael.
