Tonight Hubby and I went to the Dennos Museum Center (on Northwestern Michigan College's main campus) to see An Da Union. Ten dynamic musicians from Inner Mongolia share the haunting beauty of their homeland and culture. This was one of the most unique and interesting concerts I've ever attended. The main singing style performed by An Da Union is khoomii, commonly referred to as throat singing, a traditional type of Mongolian overtone singing, which replicates the sounds of nature. Throat singing is AMAZING!!!! I also heard one of the musicians play a bamboo flute -- he's one of only four in his country that can play the instrument! I was in awe of the entire performance. After the concert there was a wine and cheese reception (how cool is that?!?!) where we could mingle with the group and get autographs. We bought their CD...if you visit, ask me to play it for you.
We've probably all heard of "throat singing" since AT&T has that commercial out with the roommate practicing.
ReplyDeleteWell, call me dumb, but I have never heard of "throat singing"!! I cannot wait to hear the CD when we come to visit. Thanks, Traveler, for introducing something new to us! I wonder if that group travels and will be in our area...?
ReplyDeleteMaybe the commercial is airing only in some markets then. Didn't occur to me that it might not be used nationally and some folks wouldn't understand the reference! I hear it on the radio from stations in the Columbus, OH area.
