We also recently brought home a hand hewn barn beam, from an old barn in Jack's family, for our mantle on the fireplace. We believe the beam was hand hewn in the 1860-1870 timeframe.

That will look really nice, but beware, we did that at our new office and once inside the bugs started coming out of the wood, had to spray it down with bug spray for about 2 weeks. It also shrunk up when it dried out. Get it in somewhere so it can dry out and you can check it and spray for bugs. My boss used it for support legs for the counter tops in his and the guys offices.

We are taking it to have it kiln dried... that will take care of any possible "critters" in it!
